They were further influenced by iconic 60s photographer Malick Sidibé, renowned for his black and white studio portraits in Mali, as well as Northern Soul, a 60s movement inspired by black American soul music that made clubs like the Wigan Casino famous. Creative director Alessandro Michele also had in mind Malian photographer Malick Sidibé, who photographed parties and flamboyant fashion of the community of Bamako, Mali.

The fabulously groovy campaign, entitled "Soul Scene," is an homage to England's Northern Soul movement of the '60s, with photographer Glen Luchford taking visual cues from famed Malian photographer, Malick Sidibé, who documented the vibrant youth movement in 1960s Bamako.Inspired by the photographs of artist Malick Sidibé, who in the 60s and 70s captured youth culture in Africa, the Pre-Fall 2017 campaign reflects the vibrant attitude of the collection.

Despite being blind in one eye, Malik Sidibé showed artistic talent from a young age, which gained him entrance into the Institut National des Arts de Bamako (then the École des Artisans Soudanais), which until 2004 was Mali’s only national arts school.

Inspiration came from England’s underground Northern Soul movement, sparked by the prominent uprising of black American soul music of the 1960s, as well as Malian photographer Malick Sidibé,. In 1962, Sidibé launched Studio Malick in the district of Bagadadji, which thrived during its heyday in the 1960s and 70s. His commissions included studio portraits, photos of weddings, baptisms, surprise parties, and picnics, as well as pictures of railroad, highway, and architectural construction. The brand dropped its campaign today, titled “Soul Scene.” It was inspired by the portraiture of Malick Sidibe, a Malian artist who documented young nightlife in his town of Bamako in West.
